Solution Focused Therapy (SFT)

SFT is a goal-focused and evidence-based therapeutic approach. Using SFT with one of my clients means that I utilize practices from positive psychology to help the client shift their approach to change by collaborating on solutions rather than focusing on problems.

Gottman Couples Therapy

Gottman Method interventions are designed to help couples strengthen their relationships in three primary areas: friendship, conflict management, and creation of shared meaning. Couples learn to replace negative conflict patterns with positive interactions and to repair past hurts. Interventions designed to increase closeness and intimacy are used to improve friendship, deepen emotional connection, and create changes which enhances the couples shared goals. Relapse prevention is also addressed (Gottman, 2021).

Trauma Focused Approach

A specific approach to therapy that recognizes and emphasizes understanding how the traumatic experience impacts the client’s mental, behavioral, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Often used in conjunction with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).

Q: What can I/we expect from therapy?

A: One can expect to have their concerns/issues respectfully explored and assessed. The first few sessions will be utilized for assessment. During this time, I will ask structured questions to explore and develop a better understanding of your needs. We will also work collaboratively together to develop a treatment plan consistent with your goals for therapy.

Ongoing therapy sessions will be roughly 45 minutes long. You can expect to meet on a regular basis in order to get the most out of therapy and to help meet your goals.

Q: How long does therapy take?

A: Every person/family has a unique situation and length of treatment can vary.  A few things that influence length of treatment are level of commitment, therapeutic relationship, client readiness and consistency.

Q: What is a Marriage and Family Therapist?

A: Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are mental health professionals trained in psychotherapy and family systems. MFTs are independently licensed to diagnose and treat mental, emotional and substance abuse disorders within the context of marriage, couples and family systems.

Marriage and Family Therapists broaden the traditional emphasis on the individual to attend to the nature and role of individuals in primary relationship networks such as marriage and the family.  MFTs take a holistic perspective to health care; they are concerned with the overall, long-term well-being of individuals and their families (AAMFT).

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

Briana Thomas, LMFT (Nevada only)

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and earned my Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Nova Southeastern University. I entered the field in South Florida as a child protection advocate working closely with families who experienced trauma, abuse, neglect, and were impacted by substance use. Throughout my career, I have assisted many clients in overcoming some of their life’s challenges. I have had several years of experience working in community mental health as well as in substance abuse treatment facilities.

I am professionally trained and skilled in providing systemic therapeutic approaches to treat a variety of mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, grief and loss, trauma, borderline personality disorder, and AODA issues (alcohol and other drugs of abuse). As of most recently I have dedicated most of my time and focus to helping families, couples, and individuals who deal with intimate partner violence and abuse.

I am passionate about empowering others to break down barriers and achieve success in their own way. I firmly believe that each individual, family, and couple has personal strengths and resources that will aid in their ability to create the life they desire.
